B dier was born in Paris, France to Adolphe B dier, a lawyer of Breton origin, and spent his childhood in R union He was a professor of medieval French literature at the Universit de Fribourg, Switzerland 1889 1891 and the Coll ge de France, Paris c 1893.Modern theories of the fabliaux and the chansons de geste are based on two of B dier s studies.B dier revived interest in several important old French texts, including Le roman de Tristan et Iseut 1900 , La chanson de Roland 1921 , and Les fabliaux 1893 He was a member of the Acad mie fran aise from 1920 until his death.His Tristan et Iseut was translated into Cornish by A S D Smith, into English by Hilaire Belloc and Paul Rosenfeld, and into German by Rudolf G Binding.B dier was also joint editor of the two volume Litt rature fran aise, one of the most valuable modern general histories of French literature He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1929.B dier died in Le Grand Serre, France

This book could use a new edition with historical commentary about what happened after the war Bedier wrote it in 1915 based off of the journals of German prisoners captured during the First World War He was extremely precise regarding what regiments and parts of France they were attacking and committing atrocities Bedier, a philologist by training, is also culturally and contextually fair He takes time away from the actual texts and his patriotic overtones to bring up reference to some German d [...]
